Here We Go Again

Some of you may remember that last year I tried my luck with the folks at American Idol. I went to Memphis & stood in line for a good portion of my life in order to sing my heart out to strangers. Obviously, it went nowhere. I wasn’t even able to make it to the chorus of the song I chose (I guess no one told them that I was a two-time Spring Sing Host at the fabulous Harding University). I was ill prepared for the setup of the auditions. However, I had a wonderful time people watching & getting to know some new folks. So, I have decided that I will once again give them an opportunity to have me on their show. Maybe this year they’ll recognize a rock legend when they see one. Anyway, I’ll be off to Dallas to wait in line for 298,457,238 hours to sing for 15 seconds. Keep your fingers crossed.

Spring Sing Sucka!

Harry Potter Craze!

I was thinking about the whole Harry Potter craze today. I’m sure that there are those of you out there who would love to be in on the recent excitement surrounding the release of the final book in the series. However, I’m sure that there are others of you out there who would just like to know what its all about. Still others of you may believe that the Harry Potter books are just the latest tool in the arsenal of Satan, but you probably don’t read my blog. Therefore I feel safe saying this, “YOU ARE A WACKO!!!!!”

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. If you are wanting to know what Harry Potter is about or if you are wanting to be in on the craze of the last book, I have decided to give you a hand. I have provided below a brief synopsis of the first 6 books so that you can pick up the 7th ready to go without having to go through the rigamarole of reading each one all the way through. So here goes;

Book 1

Harry Potter goes to Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft & Wizardry.

He learns about the prophecy concerning him facing & defeating an evil wizard named Lord Voldemort.

Voldemort shows up only to be driven away by Harry & friends.

Book 2

Harry goes to Hogwart’s.

Voldemort shows up only to be driven away by Harry & friends

Book 3

Harry goes to Hogwart’s.

Voldemort shows up only to be driven away by Harry & friends.

Book 4

Harry goes to Hogwart’s.

Voldemort shows up only to be driven away by Harry & friends.

Book 5

Harry almost doesn’t go to Hogwart’s.

Harry goes to Hogwart’s.

Voldemort shows up only to be driven away by Harry & friends.

Book 6

Harry goes to Hogwart’s.

Voldemort shows up only to be driven away by Harry & friends.

I wonder what this 7th book will be like…

Church Philosophy

I have been reading quite a few posts recently about what makes a good church. Certainly, this is a relevant topic worth discussing, so I figured I’d toss in my two cents. Almost everybody has different ideas about what church should be like & what to look for, however, my ideas are probably the best ones (that was sarcasm, just in case you didn’t catch it).

The things that I look for spring from my beliefs about why the church exists & what it is intended to do. I believe that the church exists as the physical representation of Christ on earth. God’s Holy Spirit leads the body to be an ambassador. Therefore, I believe that the church ought to behave in the way that Christ did when He was on earth. So when I am looking at church, I look for characteristics of Christ. So, what are those characteristics? I’m glad you asked.

These are some characteristics that I look for. They aren’t in any particular order of importance. They are all invaluable & none are expendable.

1) He is inclusive- When I read about the life of Jesus, I see Him opening His arms to all people. He didn’t tell people to go away, or keep His love from them. In fact, the only people we see Him being harsh towards are the pharisees. They were not inclusive, they were exclusive. Their faith was a burden to people & in order to have fellowship with them you had to follow the laws that they set forth. Obviously, Jesus was against that mentality & faith.

2) He is a servant- Jesus is constantly serving others. He expresses His love for people by humbling Himself. He treats them with respect even when they don’t deserve it. He touches them when they are untouchable. He loves them through His actions & words. His church should do the same thing in the community it finds itself in.

This one is actually two fold. I think that when joining a church, it will be important for me to find a place where I can give to & serve others. Too many times, people visit churches wondering what they can get out of it. Jesus was a giver, not a consumer.

3) He is a teacher- Jesus served everyone alike, but His followers were given a special kind of service. He was constantly teaching them how to live in His Kingdom. He was always giving new insights into what it meant to be a citizen of that Kingdom, & calling them to a life worthy of sons & daughters of the King. His church should do the same.

These are only 3 of the things that I believe to be nonnegotiable when it comes to church. I could go on, but I’d rather hear your thoughts on this issue. How do you understand church? What is its purpose? What should its characteristics be?

Enjoy!

I think we’ve all forgotten about this song far too quickly. Please, let’s not let that happen again.

Adventures in Phoenix

Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days, but I am vacationing for a couple of weeks in the lovely Phoenix, AZ. Coincidentally enough, Phoenix is where my beautiful girlfriend Brooklynne lives. We’ve been having a blast hanging by the pool, shopping, getting pedicures, eating food, seeing movies…

…wait a second! Did he just say “getting pedicures?” Now, I want to dispel any rumors that might be going around saying that I am turning back on the supremely masculine reputation I have worked so hard to construct for myself. Obviously, the Herculean man that is Sam Peters isn’t going to change his manly lifestyle anytime soon. However, I must admit that once I was cajoled into the magical massage chair inside Phoenix’s own “Shiny Nails Salon,” I was sold. For all of my 25 years, I have gone without that singular joy in my life which is called a pedicure, but today as my Korean friend “Michelle” administered the salt scrub to my (ridiculously hairy) legs and feet, I was forced to reconcile myself to the possibility that this might become my new favorite pastime. No wonder girls do it so often! I’d like to now issue a rallying cry to all of you men out there - let us not continue allowing the women to keep this wonderful secret to themselves! This indulgence should be allowed to anyone, male or female, Jew or Gentile, slave or free, who wishes to take part in it! Women have kept this jewel of relaxation from us for far too long! So let us, men, with loud voice say “Yes! I would like my cuticles cleaned! Yes! I would like my heels buffed! AND YES! For only five extra dollars, I would like the Cucumber Sea Salt Scrub!”

Me and my baby-soft feet bid you adieu, and invite you to come back soon to view the video of this event, which will be up soon! (Once I get my girlfriend to read the instruction manual on how to get it off my phone….I mean, come on - we all know that reading instruction manuals isn’t a man’s job!)
