“Ooooo! Fight!”

I have had many firsts in my life. Some were fun & deeply relevant like June 7th, 2008 when I was married. Some were fun, but not necessarily relevant like the first time I saw an “R” rated movie without my parents (”How to be a Player” with Bill Bellamy, in case you were wondering. Which is actually a really funny story, but that’s for another time). Still others were not necessarily fun & also completely irrelevant like the first time I found a quarter on the sidewalk after 6 p.m. on a Thursday during a leap year. Today I celebrated another not fun & irrelevant first in my life. The first time students have ever broken into a fist fight under my watch.

There I was, friends, right in the middle my Block B English class teaching about journalistic feature articles, when all of the sudden, a ruckus began in the corner of the room. I don’t know what caused it, but two boys started punching & letting the expletives fly. Had I not been right in the middle of it, I think the whole thing might have actually been quite amusing. However, as it was, I had to be in charge. One kid was pretty good with the fisticuffs, and he landed some pretty square shots to the facial region of his opponent. Unfortunately, the other kid did not float like a butterfly, nor did he sting like a bee, or even a mosquito for that matter. He was outgunned, & had the fight not been broken up, he might have walked away with a crooked nose to boot. The fight was broken up & order was restored just in time for me to close with a rousing review of the five main parts of a journalistic feature article.

What are some interesting firsts in your world?
